WebSlices: this option can expose portions of a page as a WebSlice that users can subscribe to and bring that content with them on their links bar wherever they are on the web. Users receive update notifications when the content changes.
Internet Explorer 8 Beta 1 will ship in standards mode by default. However, three different rendering modes that may be set using the X-UA-Compatible header:

Author/Supplier
Microsoft

Description
These downloads are Microsoft's 2009 monthly security updates for Windows 7 64-bit, Vista, Vista 64-bit and Windows Server 2008 (plus other Windows Operating Systems if needed - which is very handy if you have to update different releases across a network). The list starts from the most recent release and goes backwards down the page. Each item includes the official Microsoft security update package in .ISO format. The downloads are quite large as they contain every patch released in a particular month for all supported Microsoft operating systems - including Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player updates (the smaller individual patches for Windows XP 32-bit and Windows 7 32-bit are available in the Windows section).

The files are in ISO format and can be burnt to a CD/DVD, virtually mounted or opened with an ISO viewer. If you have no experience with ISOs, Google can answer most questions. The ISO's have the advantage that they can be used on all Operating Systems from Windows 2000, XP, Vista and Windows 7 right through to Server 2003, 2008 and 64-bit releases. The disadvatage is that they are huge (typically ranging from 500-1500+MB for each month). The objective of this page is to help users of Windows 7 64-bit, Vista, Vista 64-bit and Server 2008 keep their Operating Systems updated - hence only ISOs from June 2009 onwards are included (Service Pack 2 for Vista and Server 2008 included all patches prior to June 2009 and Windows 7 was release in October 2009).

Important notes:
This is the final version released in May 2009.
Service Pack 1 is a pre-requisite for installing Service Pack 2.
This service pack can also be applied to Windows Server 2008 (The operating systems already shipped with Service Pack 1)

Java Virtual Machine (JVM) Build 3810

Applies to:
Windows 95/98/Me/NT/XP
Do not apply this to Windows 2000

Requirements
Windows 95/98/Me/NT/XP
Internet Explorer 4, 5.01, 5.5 or 6

Description
This download fixes known security issues with Microsoft Java Virtual Machine (JVM) and can be applied to Windows 95, 98, Me, NT or XP (but not Windows 2000). Please note that even though JVM was not included with the original release of XP, it is now part of Windows XP SP1. However, the XP SP1 version (3805) has since been found to have many security flaws. Likewise, the earlier versions of the JVM that were included with Internet Explorer 4.0 and 5.0 also contain many security holes (Internet Explorer 6 did not have the JVM included in the setup, but it is still needed by the browser in some circumstances).

Depending on your current version of Microsoft Virtual Machine, there will be many other important fixes. This latest release will fix a security vulnerability that allows a malicious Web site operator access to files on a user's computer and intranet content. It also fixes a hole that may allow script code in a Web page or HTML-based e-mail message access to ActiveX controls that should not be available in those contexts; and another one that could enable a malicious user to use an unsigned applet to read Web content behind a firewall.

Note also that Microsoft has changed the name of Java Virtual Machine to Microsoft Virtual Machine or Microsoft VM. However, most people (and Windows) still refer to it as Java Virtual Machine or JVM for short.

Microsoft .NET Framework runtime files 3.5

Applies to:
Windows XP, Vista, Server 2003 or Server 2008

Requirements
Windows XP, Vista, Server 2003 or Server 2008

Description
The .NET Framework 3.5 Serice Pack 1 (SP1) runtime file package includes everything you need to run applications developed using Microsoft's .NET Framework programming tools (eg Visual Studio 2008). What does this mean for the average user of a computer? If a software author uses .NET Framework to write programs, then you will need this runtime package in order to install and use the software. Unfortunately, it can be difficult to know whether a program needs these files because often an author fails to mention it in the help files or documentation. Typically the way you find out is that you run the program and an error message appears 'This program requires .NET Framework', 'Runtime error' (caution, this error has lots of different causes) or '1645 Error Installing Microsoft .NET Framework, Return Code [followed by four numbers].' You may even get the wonderfully frustrating 'Setup Failure - unknown reason.'

With a little luck, this latest version of the .NET Framework runtime files should get you up and running. Microsoft advise that anyone with an earlier version (eg 1.0, 2.0, 3.0) should also upgrade.

According to Microsoft the .NET Framework 3.5 service pack 1 (SP1) 'contains many new features building incrementally upon .NET Framework 2.0 and 3.0, and includes .NET Framework 2.0 service pack 1 and .NET Framework 3.0 service pack 1.' In other words, this download will update any previous release. The one downside is that you will need to be online while it checks what various bits and pieces of .NEt Framework needs to be updated.

Microsoft Security Essentials (free antivirus software)

Applies to:
Windows XP with Service Pack 3, Windows Vista with Service Pack 2 or Windows 7

Requirements
Windows XP with Service Pack 3, Windows Vista with Service Pack 2 or Windows 7

Description
Microsoft Security Essentials is the long-awaited free antivirus software program released by Microsoft. Having a PC without an antivirus program is just asking for trouble, even if a computer is not connected to the internet, there are many ways viruses and other nasties can make it on to you system - via infected USB keys, external drives, DVDs and CDs. While we think a free antivirus program is a great initiative from Microsoft, we can't help feel that something like this should have been released over a decade ago. In addition, given the litany of security holes in existing Microsoft's operating systems and other programs that have allowed viruses to spread in the first place, it causes some scepticism that this is the best antivirus program to use.

While it is better to have some protection rather than none, it will be in the real world where Microsoft Security Essentials will face its ultimate test - also keep an look out for security companies running tests using their extensive virus libraries and knowledge.

One quibble with the program is the name - it suggests a comprehensive security package - it's not. For example there is no integrated firewall. Microsoft Security Essentials is an antivirus program and there are good long-standing free alternatives such an Avast Home Edition and AVG Free edition. However, Microsoft has tried to make its antivirus software as hassle-free as possible. Initially that does seem to be the case, but only time will tell if it is as low-maintenance as the company's hype suggests. Some things we like about the program are that you don't have to register, renew licenses, update subscriptions or go through any of the pain that companies such as Symantec make you do every year. All you need is a legitimate copy of Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7.
Note: We do not believe it is wise to install and run more than one antivirus software on a computer (nor does Microsoft or any major antivirus developer). If you do decide to download Microsoft Security Essentials, consider disabling or uninstalling your other antivirus software if it is present (plus make a comprehensive system backup beforehand).
This is the complete Microsoft Security Essentials installation program and it will download from Microsoft's servers - however you will still need to update Microsoft Security Essentials for crucial signature file and program updates (this can be easily done automatically). However if you choose the manual option, we were a little surprised to see that the program itself is only around 9MB to download but manually downloading the signature/update file will take another 40+MB. You can get a copy of the signature file here

Microsoft Security Essentials and Microsoft Forefront Definitions update

Applies to:
Microsoft Security Essentials or Microsoft Forefront

Requirements
Microsoft Security Essentials or Microsoft Forefront

Description
Antivirus software can become vulnerable when it is not regularly updated. A key element in antivirus design is matching a possible virus threat against those contained in a library of known pests. In essence, the antivirus program checks for known suspects and if there is a match to one described in the library, the antivirus program identifies the culprit and takes steps to eliminate its impact. In antivirus jargon, this is this is know as a the signature library (or signature file). If your signature file is not up to date, then it is possible that new viruses can slip through since the antivirus software is not aware of the new pests' existence. From time-to-time, updates are also released for the antivirus program itself that help make it more effective and reliable.

Like other antivirus software, Microsoft Security Essentials (download a copy here) is designed to automatically update from the internet on a regular basis without you having to do go through the whole process of checking every few hurs for an update and downloading it manually. In most cases, this is the best way to keep up to date and secure. The problem is that some computers may not have stable or regular internet connections to download files that can range from as little as 1MB to over 50MB. At other times, internet connections in some parts of the world may have strict download limits or speeds. In addition, you may want to update a computer that is not connected to the internet or have several computers and not want to wait for the same signature files to be downloaded individually on each system. The solution is to manually download the latest Microsoft Security Essentials signature file and then update one or more PCs with that release.
Note: This is a permanent link that will download the latest signature updates from Microsoft's servers. Updates can be released several times a day and this link will automatically download the latest official Microsoft release.
The file can also be used to update Microsoft Forefront
To check the version number of a downloaded signature file, right click on the signature file and choose Properties from the menu (it's at the bottom). Click on the Version tab. At the top will be the heading 'File Version' with a string of numbers next to it, such as 1.67.194.0. To check the currently installed signature file, open Microsoft Security Essentials and click on the update tab at the top. Compare this number on this page to the signature file and decide if you need to run the update. If you want to see which version you are downloading, see the next point.
The Window shown below is live from the Microsoft site and displays the version number and release date of the file you are about to download.

Java Virtual Machine 6 update 23 (full standalone package)

Applies to:
Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows 2000

Requirements
Windows Vista/XP/2000

This latest release of Sun's Java Virtual Machine (JVM) can be used to update an earlier version or install the entire JVM for the first time. Version 6 adds support for Windows 7. This is the standalone package - you download a single file that can be run: at any time, used on multiple machines, or new installation of Windows.

Note: The other way to install the Sun JVM requires a computer to be connected to the Web and then use 'active download' where a smaller downloading program updates your system. This process means you can't backup the file you download, plus you can't use it multiple PCs. That's why the standalone package is a better option. This complete download should also help avoid error codes such as: 1305, 2755, 1606 and a bunch of others that are all a result of incomplete/corrupted downloads.

Note: This release also fixes several critical security holes found in the software. Sun advises all users to update the JVM immediately.

JVM allows you to run programs called 'applets' inside your Web browser. Applets are mini-programs written in the Java language specifically to run within a Web browser. Many, though not all, web browsers come with support for applets built in. By downloading this update, you will be ensured that you have the latest release which, most importantly, contains fewer security holes and is generally more stable.

Visual Basic 6 SP6 Runtime library SP6 (vb6 dlls)

Applies to:
Windows

Requirements
Windows

Description
The Visual Basic 6 SP6 runtime library, also called vb6 runtime files or vbrun dll set, are required to run programs that were written in Visual Basic 6. It can be difficult to know whether a program needs these files because often an author fails to mention it in the help files or documentation. Typically the way you find out is that you run the program and an error message appears 'A required .DLL file was not found', 'Runtime error' (caution, this error has lots of different causes) or 'Error: the file msvbvm60.dll could not be found.'

Another catch is that there are 6 major versions of Visual Basic, each with their own runtime library set (6 sets in total). Plus to make life really difficult, Visual Basic also has service pack releases. Fortunately, these are backward compatible but still can be a pain. The current set is Service Pack 6 (SP6) released in late March 2004 and it will run files written with VB 6 SP1 to SP6 .

This package includes msvbvm60.dll, oleaut32.dll, olepro32.dll and others. After you have downloaded the file, simply run it and the files will be copied to their correct location

It can be difficult to know whether a program needs these files because often an author fails to mention it in the help files or documentation. Typically the way you find out is that you run the program and an error message appears 'A required .DLL file was not found' or 'Error: the file mfc90.dll could not be found.'

The latest set for Visual C++ 2008 is Service Pack 1 (SP1) - it was released in August 2008. This package installs runtime components of C Runtime (CRT), Standard C++, ATL, MFC, OpenMP and MSDIA libraries. After you have downloaded the file, simply run it and the files will be installed to their correct location.

The advantage of this system is that you can back up the installation file for future use, transfer it to other computers (especially for those PCs with a limited connection) or avoid problems associated with interrupted downloads. The slight disadvantage is that the download can sometimes be larger than the single active download.

Notes: the full standalone package of Movie Maker Live also includes options to install other Live programs such as Messenger, Live Mail, Writer and Photo Gallery. This version of Movie Maker will not run Windows XP. The file will download directly from Microsoft's servers.

Windows Media Player 11

Applies to:
Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (SP2) installed

Requirements
Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (SP2) installed

Description
Windows Media Player 11 is the latest release of Microsoft's video and audio player. Here's the low-down:
The entire look of Media Player has been revamped with a significant update to the controls and the way cover artwork is displayed.
Windows Media Player 11 features the new music store URGE - a joint venture between MTV and Microsoft. You can also access the following stores: Audible, FYE, Live365, Movielink, MSN Music, Napster, Passalong, Puretracks, Wal-Mart, and XM Radio.
The downside is that Media Player will only support Microsoft Digital Rights Management (DRM) tracks. That means you won't be able to play songs purchased through iTunes.
As expected, Media Player 11 also can rip CDs and play videos/DVDS. It can also organise music libraries and manage downloads to media devices (eg MP3 players).

Windows Media Player Codec Installation Package 9

Applies to:
Windows XP, Windows Server 2003

Requirements
Windows XP, Windows Server 2003

Description
Microsoft offer the following summary of codecs:

'Codecs determine the size of a file, the bit rate of a stream, and the way encoded video and audio content looks and sounds. The codecs do this by compressing an audio or video source during encoding and then decompressing the audio or video during playback.'

In other words, there are many ways you can make a video file smaller, but each technique requires the end user (that is, your PC) to have the right files installed (codecs) on the system in order to view the compressed video. If you have ever downloaded a file and found the frustration of Media Player wanting or refusing to download more codecs, then this pack should help.

Back to Microsoft:

'This package delivers support for the latest Windows Media Audio and Video codecs for computers running Windows Media Player 7.1, Windows Media Player for Windows XP, Windows Media Player 9 Series, and Windows Media Player 10'.

Keep in mind that it is only the Microsoft codec pack and does not cover other video file types such as DivX or Xvid (which are confusingly called AVI files too).

Windows Media Player MPEG-2 and DVD Video Decoder Utility

Applies to:
Media Player 10

Requirements
Windows XP and Media Player 10

Description
This free DVD and MPEG-2 utility from Microsoft is designed for systems running XP with Media Player 10 installed. Here's the low-down from Microsoft:

'The Windows XP Video Decoder Checkup Utility helps you determine if an MPEG-2 video decoder (also called a DVD decoder) is installed on your Windows XP computer and whether or not the decoder is compatible with Windows Media Player 10 and Windows XP Media Center Edition.

An MPEG-2 decoder is software that allows you to play DVDs and files that contain video content that was encoded in the MPEG-2 format (such as DVR-MS files, MPG files, and some AVI files).

If you encounter a problem while using Windows Media Player 10 to synchronize (copy) recorded TV shows to a Portable Media Center or other device, use this utility to verify that you have a compatible MPEG-2 decoder installed on your computer.

Note: This utility only indicates whether an MPEG-2 decoder is compatible with the synchronization feature of Windows Media Player 10 or whether an MPEG-2 decoder is compatible with the recorded TV playback feature of Windows XP Media Center Edition.

This utility:

• Lists all the MPEG-2 video decoders that appear in your Windows registry (a database that contains information about the hardware and software installed in your computer).
• Indicates whether each decoder listed in the registry is marked as compatible with Windows XP Media Center Edition and whether any decoder listed in the registry is marked as the preferred video decoder.
• Indicates whether each decoder listed in the registry is marked as compatible with the synchronization feature of Windows Media Player 10.
• Lets you designate which installed decoder that you want Windows Media Player 10 to use when synchronizing DVR-MS files to a portable device. This is known as the preferred video decoder.
• Lets you undo any changes the utility makes to your Windows registry'.

DirectX 9.0c (full package)

DirectX 9.0c will help improve multimedia experiences on most PCs. This latest version of DirectX offers better security, updated graphics, faster frame rates, and support for massively multiplayer games. It also features more immersive audio when running and displaying programs rich in multimedia elements such as full-color graphics, video, 3-D animation and surround sound. If you had an earlier version of DirectX installed on your system, you will see little difference in available space on your hard drive following the installation. DirectX 9.0c will overwrite any earlier versions. This release also resolves a number of minor bugs and includes security updates.

Important notes:

  • This is the 'redist' version of DirectX - all files are downloaded in one package (rather than an active download).
  • Instructions: make a system backup or restore point. Double-click on the file once the download has completed. You will be asked where you want to place the extracted files. This is a temporary folder only - you can delete these files once the Direct X 9.0c installation has completed. Now go to that temporary folder. There will be lots of files in there - run DXSETUP.exe and wait for it to complete the installation. Restart you computer if required. Now you can delete the files in the temporary folder. For future use, you can keep the file you downloaded or simply delete it - it doesn't matter.
  • DirectX is a crucial system component. It cannot be uninstalled without reinstalling your operating system (!) or performing a system restore/system recovery.
  • To determine what version is current installed on your system and other tips about DirectX, see our guide here.
  • This version of DirectX was released June 2010.
